The second quarter was highlighted by the April groundbreaking of the TransLatin@ Coalition's Wellness and Empowerment Center. Founded in 2009, the association has grown into a nationally recognized organization advocating for equity, access, and dignity for TGI communities, particularly immigrant populations.
The new facility will expand the organization's ability to deliver comprehensive services including wellness programming, housing support, workforce development, and policy advocacy all under one roof.
The groundbreaking ceremony brought together civic leaders, community advocates, and project partners to celebrate the start of construction on what will become a first-of-its-kind, community-owned wellness hub in Los Angeles. Once complete, the new center will serve as a cornerstone for empowerment, healing, and advancement: further solidifying Los Angeles as a leader in inclusive, community-driven development.
"This is exactly the type of work that defines our mission, building spaces that uplift communities and create lasting positive change," said Nick Mata, President of Mata Construction.
Designed by RCDF Studio, the new headquarters will feature a thoughtfully designed two-story commercial building featuring community spaces, commercial areas, offices, and on-site parking, while the second floor will be dedicated entirely to office use. A rooftop terrace will crown the building, creating a modern and functional environment tailored to the organization's mission.
Building spaces where creativity thrives!
We recently completed a project for TUMO Los Angeles: a nonprofit that offers free tech and design education for teens. With no fees, no grades, and no exams, TUMO puts teens in charge of their own learning across areas like digital media, music, animation, and game development.
The new space includes a music studio, recording room, conference rooms, private offices, and more; all designed to fuel hands-on, creative learning.
In addition to acquiring hard skills in 14 learning areas at the intersection of technology and design, TUMO students learn how to become self-motivated, develop higher-order skills, and approach learning with a can-do attitude.
As a result, their students perform much better in school, even in subjects like math that are not taught at TUMO. Their alumni excel in higher education and develop a life-long commitment to independent learning, consistently distinguishing themselves as top performers, long after leaving TUMO.
We are grateful to be a small contributor to a project that matters and opens doors for the next generation!
Representing decades of hands-on craftsmanship and serving as one of our Superintendents, Sammy Vega brings deep field experience and a lifelong passion for building to our team. He has developed expertise in framing, ground-up construction, and superintendent-level project leadership.
His deep field expertise, steady leadership on-site, and dedication to craftsmanship support the seamless execution of high-quality projects across sectors. Celebrating 11 years with Mata this October, Sammy continues to shape our jobsites and mentor the next generation of builders as part of our team's foundation!

Building the next generation of construction leaders!
Our team recently had the opportunity to participate in the Build California Summer Camp, where we connected with rising high school juniors and seniors exploring careers in the construction industry.
Our team members shared their career journeys, discussed the many opportunities within construction, and gave students a firsthand look at what it takes to bring projects to life. Through conversations and Q&A sessions we hope to inspire the next generation to see construction as a rewarding and impactful career.
We're grateful to Build California and the Southern California Laborers' Training School for creating this incredible program and allowing us to be part of shaping the future of our industry.

Congratulations to PUENTE Learning Center, Brandow & Johnston, Berliner Architects and Mata Construction on the completion of the Seismic Retrofit project and recognition in the SEAOC/SEAOSC 2026 Structural Engineering Excellence Awards.
This 50,000 SQ FT, two-story steel structure in Boyle Heights, built in 1995 with a striking cruciform plan and 32-foot cantilevers, needed a full seismic upgrade following a change in occupancy to Risk Category III.
The challenge: protect the building's signature exposed structural look, keep the interior largely untouched, and keep the school open and in session for students and staff throughout the entire build.
Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis and supplemental damping were used to limit demands on the existing framing. Exterior damper frames (two-story on the east/west, single-story on the north/south) kept the heavy lift outside the envelope, and interior work was confined to off-hours, so classes and programs continued uninterrupted.
A stronger building, delivered without ever pausing the mission inside it.
